Self Care for Entrepreneurs

I thought we'd take our conversation in a different direction this week and talk about Self-Care. I know, I know, I love the how to's and tutorials as much as you do, but it's time to come to terms with how important self care is!

I love my business. You love your business. We are more than happy to spend nearly every waking (and sometimes sleeping!) moment working on it. Completing work for our ah-mazing clients, marketing and promoting ourselves, writing the next big blog post. The day can be over in the blink of an eye and we've only seen the computer screen.

I'm envisioning one of those time lapse videos with the sun coming up and going down in a matter of a few seconds.

So let's discuss some ways to make the most of our days while still getting up and getting out a little so we don't lose ourselves in the process of building our empires.

First off, and this isn't so much a self care tip as it is a scheduling tip, I recommend blocking time in your schedule for your different tasks. For example, I have client work, work for my business, work for an online course I'm taking, a second business, and a small dog walking business. That's a LOT to fit into a day without getting totally lost and never seeing the sun. Except when walking the dogs.

Once all that became chaos on my schedule, I began to block off time for each thing. For me, it looks like this:

I try, if at all possible, to not let one thing bleed into another. Sometimes that's unavoidable so it's important to be flexible. But I think you'll find a lot of relief having the time blocked and knowing that everything will have it's time. I know that I can spend 1pm-4pm writing blog and social media posts, because the studying will come between 6pm and 8pm. Whew!

Now that you have your schedule set and everything has its place, I think you'll find it a lot easier to step away for a few minutes here and there. So, what can you do to self care and relaxation during these busy days? Well the possibilities are nearly endless!

  1. Take a 10 minute walk around the block. This super simple, short exercise will get you outside, away from your desk, and get your blood flowing!

  2. Drink water. Water cures a lot of things! Have a headache? Drink water. Feeling tired? Drink some water. Feeling hungry? WATER! You'll be surprised how refreshed you'll feel by stepping away and drinking a nice cold glass of water. It's like a brand new day!

  3. Eat regular, healthy meals. It's so easy to get so engrossed on what we're working on that we forget to eat. Or we mindlessly snack instead of taking a few minutes to plan out a healthy, fulfilling meal. Next thing you know, you're starving and ravish the first thing you see. I'm sure I don't need to tell you why this isn't a good thing. So take a few minutes every couple of hours to eat something that's good for you and will keep you full until the next meal!

  4. Go out and meet people. Working remotely has tons of benefits. TONS. But, one of the downfalls is most certainly isolation. It's very easy to stay home and work and not quite realize just how long it's been since you've seen people in the flesh. Make it a point, at least once a week, to go out with people. You'll be amazed at how much this helps your productivity and inspiration!

  5. Get plenty of sleep. This one should probably be number one. (Although this list isn't in any particular order!) I know its so easy to just work through the night when you are inspired and working on a project and want to get it done. And those nights are okay from time to time. But its very important to make sure you get enough sleep on a regular basis. It will help with stress and being tired and may even bring you some clarity!

There are plenty more self care habits you can begin for yourself. Self care is all about taking care of yourself first. We as entrepreneurs tend to put our businesses first. It comes naturally for us. But if our health or sanity suffers, so does our business.

I'd love for you to leave a comment and tell me what self care habits you have!

Until next time, Lovelies!

xx,
Delana
